Nutrition Program Last week a group of nursing students from Hocking College presented a nutrition program to our 2nd, 3rd, and 4th graders. Their program included several interactive educational activities that students found thoroughly enjoyable! I would like to thank Mrs. Saffell and the Hocking College nursing students for coming to our school and sharing their fantastic program with us! February 7, 2012 Newsletter 22 2nd Grade News Valentine’s Day To celebrate Valentine’s Day, 2nd grade will be participating in a classroom activity rotation with kindergarten, 1st, 3rd, and 4th grades on the afternoon of Tuesday, February 14th. This will be similar to the classroom activity rotation we held at Halloween. The teachers (Mrs. Fondale, Mrs. Demeter, Mrs. Walters, Mrs. Reed and I) will plan Valentine’s Day related activities and each grade will rotate among the different classrooms stations in order to take part in each activity. For the final station each grade will be back in their own classroom to exchange Valentine’s with their classmates. Students may bring in Valentine’s cards to pass out and a box/bag in which to receive cards. This will be a simple exchange and not a full blown “party”. Students are not allowed to pass out candy, cookies, cupcakes, or any other edible treats, so please refrain from sending these items in. However, students may pass out non-edible treats (such as pencils, stickers, small party-favor type toys, etc.) as long as they have enough for each child. A class list is included on back. Interims Interims for the third nine weeks will be sent home this Fri., Feb. 10th. Do not be concerned if your child does not bring home an interim report. Just as was done the past two quarters, reports are only being sent if there is an issue regarding academic performance or behavior that needs to be reported and/or addressed. However, please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or concerns of your own regarding your child’s progress. January 24, 2012 Newsletter 20 2nd Grade News Snow Days Just another reminder, if something is due to be turned in (homework packets, Scholastic Book Orders, Book-It calendars, etc.) and school is cancelled for that day, it will be due the next day we are in session. This goes for tests also. If we are cancelled the day we are supposed to have a test, it will be re-scheduled for the day we return. 2nd Grade Mass We did not get to present the school Mass on Jan. 20th because of the snow day. At this time I do not know if our class will be assigned an additional Mass to make up for missing last Fri. However, I still want to thank parents and families for taking the time to help prepare students who were supposed to read at Mass. January 17, 2012 Newsletter 19 2nd Grade News Classroom Supplies Because of the generosity of many 2nd grade families, our stock of classroom supplies has been replenished. The only items we are still in need of are tissues. We seem to go through these faster than anything else, so if you are ever willing to send some in we would greatly appreciate them. 2nd Grade Mass We are in charge of planning the school Mass for this Friday, Jan 20th. Assigned readings went home with students last Thursday and I am sending an extra copy home with students today. We will practice each day here at school, but students who are reading during Mass should also practice at home. Please remember, you are invited to join us for the all-school Mass on Friday at 9:00am. Returning Report Cards This is just a reminder that the format of report cards this year is a bit different from that of the past several years. You are being asked to sign and return both the report card and the envelope each quarter. Upon receiving your child’s signed report card and envelope back at school, I will send a copy of the current report card home for you to keep. Snow Days To clarify and simplify matters up front: if something is due to be turned in (homework packets, Scholastic Book Orders, Book-It calendars, etc.) and school is cancelled for that day, it will be due the next day we are in session. This goes for tests also. If we are cancelled the day we are supposed to have a test, it will be re-scheduled for the day we return. Mid-Year Progress Reports Since we have reached the mid-point of the year, students are re-taking the AR Star Reader Test. We began testing last week and will finish this week. Results of the test will show how each student’s reading level has changed (hopefully increased) since the beginning of the year. Be on the lookout for a copy of this report to be coming home soon with your child. Along with this report, I will also be sending home a statement of your child’s AR goal results for the 2nd quarter, their AR goal for the 3rd quarter, and an update of their math fact timed test progress. What We’re Learning: Language Arts: words with r-controlled vowels: ar, or; identifying verbs Math: finishing chapter on modeling 2-digit addition Religion: preparation and practice for 2nd grade Mass presentation Science: habitats (food chains & food webs) Social Studies: movement of the earth around the sun Health: finishing chapter on caring for teeth Reminders *Math Test: Thurs., Jan. 19th *Spelling Test: Fri., Jan. 20th *Health Test: Fri., Jan. 20th *School Mass Presented by 2nd grade: Fri., Jan. 20th, 9:00AM *Scholastic Book Orders Due: Fri., Jan. 27th | | Classroom Blogs - Grades K-2nd | | Written by Kindra Ervin | | Tuesday, January 10 2012 00:00 | St. Rose School Ms. Ervin This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. January 10, 2012 Newsletter 18 2nd Grade News Classroom Supplies We are very grateful to have received some of the items we were in need of for our classroom over the past week. Thank you so much for your help! 2nd Grade Mass Our class is in charge of planning the school Mass for next Friday, Jan 20th. We will decide on readers before the end of this week and those students selected to read will bring home their reading parts to practice over the long weekend. Here at school, we will be practicing for the Mass each day next week. However, next week is a short week, so if your child has a reading part, I ask that you please, please also practice each day with your child at home. Also, please join us and support our class by attending Mass next Friday at 9:00am. Note About Report Cards Report cards will be sent home this Thursday, Jan. 12th. In trying to eliminate confusion I thought I should explain how addition math facts will be assessed on student report cards. Students can only be given a ü in this area if they have mastered all addition facts up through +18’s. Since we just recently began timed tests, it is unreasonable to expect that any student could have achieved this level of mastery. Therefore, at this point it is impossible that any student could have met this standard, thus no ü’s will be given in this area for the second quarter. If your child’s report card shows an I in this area then this means they are currently making adequate progress toward meeting the standard. However, if your child’s report card shows an N in this area then this means they are not currently making adequate progress toward meeting the standard. Do not hesitate to contact me if you have any further questions about this issue. Also, please continue to practice these math facts at home with your child. What We’re Learning: Language Arts: words with blends spr, scr, str; noun review (singular, plural, possessives) Math: extended practice of modeling 2-digit addition Religion: the Holy Family Science: how living things use their habitats Social Studies: seasons and climate; movement of the earth Health: keeping teeth & gums clean Reminders *Spelling Test: Thurs., Jan. 12th *No School: Fri.
