I would like to personally thank Mrs. Lucas for her dedication and service to us this year. She really made a difference and was an excellent teacher. Basketball tournament St. Rose Athletics will be hosting the 2nd Annual 4/th5th/6th grade boys and girls basketball tournament. The tournament will be held on Feb. 8th, 9th, and 10th at St. Rose and New Lexington Schools. This tournament is a major source of funding for St. Rose Athletics. It is this funding that allows us to provide a variety of sports programs for our students. Over $8000 was raised last year from the tournament. In conjunction with efforts from the St. Rose 5K Turkey Trot and other appreciative income, we were able to buy new footballs, basketballs, volleyballs, a gym floor cleaning machine and many other necessary items. This money also helps pay for league fees and referee fees. Please help support this program by volunteering to work the following positions: door, concessions, raffles, and clock operators. We are asking that you work a 4hour shift…or more if you are able. We need to fill 120 shifts to make this happen. ALL VOLUNTEER HOURS WORKED COUNT TOWARDS YOUR ST. ROSE SCHOOL VOLUNTEER HOURS REQUIREMENT!!! If you can help please call Ed Hammond (740-621-1228) or J.C. Schaumleffel (740-621-3110). If each family could donate canned pop and/or 20 oz Gatorades that would help keep our costs down too. These donations can be dropped off during school hours in the basement of the PCC. Let’s all pitch in and help sponsor the tournament!
“Avenue Express”
I am pleased to tell you that St. Rose’s “Avenue Express” has been accepted as a submission for a $10,000 grant from NBC4 Make a Difference Grant. This grant (if we win) will provide 10 IPADs (a classroom set), 2 laptop computers and professional development for teachers. “Avenue Express” will encourage students to apply curriculum content to inform, change thinking or influence behaviors using the multimedia programs on IPADs. The IPADs would enable students to demonstrate their learning orally and visually in student created presentations. Parents, relatives and friends will be asked to vote for the project beginningFeb. 4th. Information about how to vote, who can vote and where to vote will be coming on Monday, Feb. 4th. Your vote and the votes of supporting relatives and friends will be vitally important to help us win. Thanks to Teresa Medaugh for her help with the project submission. Let’s all pray that we win!!! 100th Day; 100 Years; 101 Students St. Rose celebrated the 100th day of the 100th year of school last Wednesday. A picture was taken of the students who currently attend St. Rose. We had an enrollment of 100 students to start the year, but recently enrolled a new Kdg student to push us up to 101 students! The students created a heart shaped message telling why they love St. Rose School. Ruby Hagy, a first grader and daughter of Dr. and Dr. Gray and Laura Hagy composed a song that might soon become the school song. Students were treated to cake at lunch. It was a wonderful 100th day of school in a very special 100year old school.
1st Communion Meeting Parents and students who will be making their First Communion this year must attend a meeting tonight at 6:00pm in the lower level of the PCC. Father Dury will be reviewing the expectations of the students and their parents during this time of preparation. Please make sure to sign in when you arrive.
Loose Tooth Club 9 out of 11 Kindergarten students are officially members of the ‘Loose Tooth Club’. It is predicted that all 11 will soon be members due to the wiggle ness of the remaining teeth! To become a member, you must be a Kindergarten student and have a wiggly tooth that eventually falls out. When this happens, your picture is taken with a wide-open smile and you are awarded a certificate. Loosing a tooth means that you are well on your way to becoming a first grader! Congratulations to our toothless friends!

From the Principal:
When we believe something is beneficial to us, we do it often. We eat three meals a day, brush our teeth, exercise (hopefully) and we make sure our kids finish their homework. While it’s true we may not always feel like doing any of the above, we discipline ourselves to do things we know are important.
Going to Mass each week requires discipline. We may not know exactly the problems we’re preventing by spending time listening to God’s Word and receiving the Eucharist each week. Studies show, however, that couples that attend church together each week are less likely to divorce. Regular churchgoers have a lower incidence of depression than other people. During Mass you think about becoming a better version of yourself. A week without Mass means you didn’t take any time to do that. Mass is not a self-centered consumer event. It’s about praising God and taking part in the meal that reminds us who we are: the Body of Christ. That gives us new energy to help transform our world. The Mass nudges us toward becoming a better version of ourselves. Nice New Year’s resolution.

Dear Parents~
Happy New Year! As we look into 2013, let us remember the presence of God within our lives so that we may be blessed with peace. We will finish our first semester on Friday and report cards will be going home on the 18th. I will be sending home to you a list of our accomplishments for this first half of the year. I am very proud of what we have been able to do in our academic program and the service projects that we have completed. Our basketball teams are showing a great spirit and there are more games yet to come. I would like to thank you for all of your support to our school and I feel very blessed to be the principal. I wish for a prosperous new year for our school and for your family. God bless you!

St. Rose Recycles
Our second graders have gotten into the swing of our recycling program. They have taken on a project in cooperation with St. Jude’s Ranch for Children. This program recycles your used greeting cards and creates new holiday greeting cards for any occasion. Recycled cards are sold in packs of 10 for $10 to support their programs and services. Currently they are looking for both Birthday and Thank-you card submissions, but old Christmas cards will be accepted. Criteria for accepting includes all types of greeting cards, but only the card front can be used (check to make sure there is no writing on the backside of the front of the card). We cannot accept any Hallmark, Disney or American Greeting cards. If you have any cards you would like to donate please send them into school and our second graders will sort them and box them up to send to St. Jude’s Ranch in Boulder City, New York. Cold weather apparel
Students should come to school prepared to be outside if the temperature or wind chill is above 24 degrees. Hats are especially important to help keep body temperatures warm. We try to make sure students wear their hats, scarves, and gloves and they button or zip up their coats when going outside. Students may keep an extra sweater or sweatshirt here at school if they are feeling cold. Any of these items should be clearly marked with the student’s name. St. Vincent DePaul Students were generous in their donation of paper goods to St. Vincent DePaul. The volunteers at the center were very thankful for our donation. It was greatly appreciated. St. Rose Alumni
Current Bishop Rosecrans sophomore Brendon Schaumleffel continues to excel in both the classroom and the swimming pool. An honor roll student, Brendon has been setting personal best records as he competes for the Bishops’ swim team. On December 9, he won the 200m individual medley (2:34) and was part of three different relay teams which also captured first place finishes. He swam in the 200m back relay (2:17.6), the 200m missed free style relay (1:54.3) and 400m missed free relay (4:21). On January 3, the Bishops finished 2-1 in a quad meet held at RHS. Schaumleffel won the 200m free (2:21). He also swam with the winning 200m and 400m relay teams. On January 5, Brendon captured second in the 100m breast stroke and third in the 100m fly at the SEOSL event. Brendon graduated from St. Rose Catholic School I n 2011. He is the son of JC and Carol Schaumleffel of Corning.
Emily Vigue, also a St. Rose graduate of 2011, has been selected to attend the Hugh O’Brien Youth Leadership Conference at Denison University this coming May. Emily is a sophomore at Fisher Catholic High School in Lancaster. The Youth Leadership’s mission is to inspire and develop our global community of youth and volunteers to a life dedicated to leadership, service, and innovation. Emily is the daughter of Ron Vigue and Janna Vigue, both of Junction City and the granddaughter of Ron and Pat Vigue. No School
St. Rose School will not be in session on Monday, January 21st in observance of Martin Luther King Day. School will resume on the 22nd. There will be no bus service for students on the 22nd because New Lexington Schools will not be in session. Call (740) 342-3043
If your student is going to be late arriving at school, or is sick, please call the school office to inform us. If your child throws up or has a temperature, they must wait 24 hours or be fever free before returning to class. If we follow this standard we can cut down on the number of flu related illnesses.
*Our prayers go out to Pat Sweeney who was recently diagnosed with cancer. Pat was a custodian responsible for the cleanliness of the PCC. If you would like to send a card to Pat his address is 2066 Twp. Rd. 187, Junction City, Oh 43748. I am sure cards would be appreciated.

Pictured here is Chase Embrey, Clayton Matheny, and Jacob Keffer working on a quilt for a pet funded by the 3rd grade’s Pennies for Pets project.
 | | BlueKnight News | | Written by Roxanne Demeter | | Wednesday, December 05 2012 11:00 | $$$ Pennies for Pets $$$ Pennies for Pets is in full swing. So far the third grade class has collected 10,300 pennies. With the help of Mrs. Medaugh, students designed signs on the library computer using a Print Shop program. Emphasis was directed to students’ understanding what information is needed and to make the sign pleasing to the eye. After counting and wrapping the pennies, coloring in their large goal thermometer visually shows their success. Mrs. Lucas reports the students have set a goal of 20,000 pennies although they hope to exceed this amount. Many of our educational standards are being met with this simple service project!
4th grade, Kindergarten and 1st grade use IPADs
The 4th, Kindergarten and 1 st grades have been taking advantage of using the IPAD in the library. Using the video application they have rehearsed the play, ‘Slurping Beauty’ and to practice the songs for the school Christmas program. It has been interesting listening to them critique their performances and finding out how they really sound.
My Coke Rewards My Coke Rewards project ends this Friday, Dec. 7th. A big thank you to everyone who has contributed to it. As of today, we have 7,156 points!!!
Terra NovaParent reports from the Terra Nova test will be sent home before Christmas break. Previews of the early results indicate that students are performing 10 to 20 points higher than their peers at their grade level in the areas of reading, language and science and above average in math. More details and information will be coming.
Secret Santa The Home and School is sponsoring a “Secret Santa” shop for students to purchase gifts for special family and friends. Classes will resume on Wednesday, January 2, 2013! There will be no buses on January 2nd, as New Lexington does not resume until January 3rd. Please note this early dismissal and transportation change on your calendars.Feeling the Wonder of Advent
Here are some ideas to make Advent a family event.Dec. 4 – In your family prayer invite everyone to mention someone or a group of people who need God’s love and watchfulness. As each mentions someone, all can respond with, “Watch us, Lord, and keep us safe.” Read Luke 10:21-24Dec. 5 – In your family prayer invite everyone to take a turn thanking God for something. Read Matthew 15:29-37Dec. 6 – It’s St. Nicholas Day. St. Nicolas is said to have left bags of gold at the doorstep of a poor father who couldn’t afford a dowry for his daughters. Brainstorm some random acts of kindness family members can do. When the good deeds are performs, the person gets a gold foil piece of chocolate. Read Matthew 7:21,24-27Dec. 7 – Pray in silence. Afterwards, talk about how God often speaks in the silence of our hearts. Build a fort with pillows and blankets, and read some books together in the fort or read Matthew 9:27-31Dec. 8 – Say a Hail Mary together. Give your children a purpose, or a small job to do to get your house ready for Christ’s birth. Maybe someone can dust off the nativity scene, keep the tree watered, or draw pictures of Jesus in the manger. Read Luke 1:26-38Dec. 9 – Make the sign of the cross on the forehead of each person as you say, “God bless you and keep you in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.” Be sure to light the first and second candles of your Advent wreath. Read Luke 3:1-6Dec. 10 - Invite everyone to take turns mentioning a gift they have received from God and why they are grateful for it. Advent’s liturgical color is violet. Play an Advent “I Spy” game today, and see how many violet (purple) things you can find around the house. Read Luke 5:17-26. | | BlueKnight News | | Written by Roxanne Demeter | | Wednesday, December 05 2012 10:57 | BLUE KNIGHT NEWS November 26, 2012

Fourth grader reads! Mrs. Reed’s fourth grade class has started reading with Ms. Ervin’s first grade class. On Fridays they partner up and help the first graders read their books. They help them with new words, asking questions about the stories and just enjoying the reading process. Everyone has a great time and looks forward to it!
Christmas program St. Rose students will present a Christmas play entitled, “Making Miracles” on Monday, December 17, 2012 at 7:00pm. The play is a story of three angels who are looking for the spirit of Christmas here on earth. There will be Christmas songs and a presentation from the bell choir. The play will be held in the PCC. Please plan to attend.

Secret Santa Our Secret Santa shop will be open on Wednesday, December 12th thru December 14th in the lower level of the PCC. Students will have the option of shopping for items for family members. Purchases will be made on Thursday and Friday. Secret Santa is an opportunity for our students to be thinking of others during this holiday season. Staci Joseph is Chairwoman for this project and could use some help during this time. If you can donate your time to help, please call Staci or call the school office at 342-3043. Thanks
Over the Thanksgiving holiday, I had time to stop and time to think about all the blessings that God has granted to me. This year I am especially thankful for two babies (twins) coming in early 2013 to my daughter and son-in-law, the cancer free report my husband received and the wonderful care that my Mother receives at Hillview. But, I am also thankful for this school and the community that continues to support it. There is such a sense of devotion in the children and the staff here each day. God has truly blessed us all. Don’t forget that next Sunday is the first Sunday of Advent. Have you got your Advent wreath ready? | |
